Neen, The Golden Globes georganiseerd door de Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), is niet meer wat het ooit is geweest. In wezen stelt The Golden Globes zelfs niet al teveel voor en is het eerder een zoveelste glamour show. Wie hier uiteindelijk wint is zelfs niet zo belangrijk. De show scoorde hoge kijkcijfers met Ricky Gervais, maar nadien moest het ook doorheen covid en een moment van woke, waarin de show bekritiseerd werd voor zijn weinig divers kiezerspubliek, naast beschuldigingen van onethisch gedrag. Er werden beschuldigingen geuit over nepotisme en het weren van gekwalificeerde professionals uit de film- en televisie-industrie vanwege hun achtergrond. In reactie op de toenemende druk besloot NBC, de zender die The Golden Globes uitzond, de ceremonie niet uit te zenden in 2022 en kwamen er “structurele veranderingen”.

De host van de nacht was Jo Koy en we zijn inderdaad ver verwijderd van Gervais. Zijn grappen waren nogal flets, flauw en voor de hand liggend, maar gelukkig kon hij er vooral zelf mee lachen. In ieder geval was het vooral de nacht van Oppenheimer (2023). Nolan had zelf niet echt een inspirerende acceptance speech klaar maar hij verzilverde met zijn film toch 4 Globles, waaronder dé belangrijkste met name Beste Film. De grootste verliezer was dan weer Barbie, die zelfs niet in de categorie van Oppenheimer zat maar uiteindelijk verloor van Poor Things (2023). Erger nog, het won voor Beste Origine Muzieknummer én Beste Box-office, nu toch niet meteen de belangrijkste prijzen, ook al vind ik dat Beste Box-Office eigenlijk wel een award mag zijn ook bij de Oscars, want in wezen is dat ook wel een verdienste, ook al mag de film misschien niet zo artistiek of verheven zijn.
“Succession” die met zijn laatste seizoen nog maar een keertje zij stempel zette, en deze keer wél met een grappige speech van Kieran Culkin. Voor de rest ben ik ook wel blij voor de erkenning van Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) maar ook dat deze film ook hiermee een erkenning krijgt, want het is verdomd moeilijk om dergelijke projecten gefinancierd te krijgen.
