Wel, de box-office nummers zijn binnen van de nieuwe Lindsay Lohan prent I Know Who Killed Me (2007). En wat blijkt, het publiek begint na lange tijd in te zien dat Lohan eigenlijk als actrice maar weinig voorstelt en bleven massaal weg. De prent flopte met glans en je kon bijna de vreugdekreet horen bij heel wat filmrecensenten.
De film opende op 1320 schermen in de States met een miserabele recette van 3.5 miljoen dollar. Verwacht wordt dat de film niet meer dan 10 miljoen dollar zal opbrengen in zijn bioscoop-release in de States. Betekent dit het einde van Lohan? Een mens mag toch hoop blijven koesteren, niet? Toch vrees ik er voor. Hoe dan ook, regisseur Chris Sivertson begon het zaakje niet te minimaliseren, maar bekritiseerde ook wel het feit dat sommige pop-idolen niet altijd een voordeel zijn voor een filmproject. Dit is wat hij zei op de blog van Matt Dentler over zijn film:
“Well, what can you do? We try to get well-known people in our movies to get some awareness going and to get attention, and then I guess you can’t really complain when the attention takes an unwanted turn. The only thing that bums me out about the entire experience is that it didn’t make more money.
I don’t mind being hated by the critics. It’s interesting to see how the press covers it. After the opening weekend, they were happy to proclaim that we had “tanked.” Bratz (2007) and Hot Rod (2007) came out the next weekend and when you look at the amount of screens they were on, they basically had the same box office results we did.
But come Monday morning, those films ‘had difficulty finding an audience in a crowded marketplace.’ Well, at least they didn’t tank! But whatever, you know, press and publicity is so fleeting that it’s hard to take seriously whether it’s positive or negative. The only thing to do is ignore it and make more movies.”
Ik kan de man enkel maar gelijk geven. Hopelijk zal hij met zijn volgende prent zich niet laten leiden door wat de producers hem voorschotelen. Of misschien moet hij maar eens beroep doen op een “echte acteur” zoals Matt Damon, die volgens de cijfers van Forbes ‘bankable’ is. Zo bleek uit de cijfers van The Bourne Ultimatum (2007).
